Large Numbers Around Us
About this chapter
Large Numbers Around Us is the Class 7 Ganita Prakash Part 1 opening chapter. It moves the learner beyond five digits into the world of lakhs, crores, arabs, millions and billions. Through Eshwarappa the farmer, Roxie and Estu, the chapter shows how one lakh feels in real life — the population of Chintamani, the height of the Statue of Unity, the seating in Ahmedabad's cricket stadium. Six sections cover the building blocks: 'A Lakh Varieties', 'Land of Tens' calculators (Thoughtful Thousands, Tedious Tens, Handy Hundreds, Creative Chitti, Systematic Sippy), 'Of Crores and Crores' with the Indian and American naming systems, 'Exact and Approximate Values' with round up and round down, nearest-neighbour rounding, populations of Indian cities, multiplication shortcuts and digit-count rules for products. For CTET Paper 2 Mathematics, this chapter is tested through Indian place-value reading, comma placement, lakh-crore-million conversion, nearest-neighbour rounding, digit-count of products and estimation. The four tests below — Practice 15 Q, Quiz 15 Q, Hard 15 Q, Mastery 30 Q — cover all six sections at the right depth.
