Fractions
About this chapter
Fractions is the seventh chapter of Class 6 Ganita Prakash. It builds the idea of a fraction from the simple act of sharing — one roti between two children, then among four, then among more — and shows that the more people share the same whole, the smaller each share. The chapter develops eight ideas: fractional units (1/2, 1/3, 1/4, … and why 1/100 is bigger than 1/200); fractional units as parts of a whole (chikki cut into equal pieces of different shapes); measuring with fractional units (paper-strip folding); marking fraction lengths on the number line; mixed fractions and how to convert between mixed numbers and improper fractions; equivalent fractions through paper-strip fraction walls and equal shares; expressing a fraction in lowest terms; comparing fractions by converting to a common denominator; addition and subtraction of fractions using Brahmagupta's method (same denominator and different denominators). CTET Paper 2 Mathematics tests this chapter through equivalent-fraction items, simplification, comparison, mixed-improper conversion, addition/subtraction word problems and pedagogy items on common student misconceptions. The four tests below — Practice 15, Quiz 15, Hard 15, Mastery 30 — cover all eight ideas at the right depth and CTET difficulty.
