A Peek Beyond the Point
About this chapter
A Peek Beyond the Point is the third chapter of Class 7 Ganita Prakash Part 1. It begins with Sonu's screw-fixing problem to motivate the need for smaller units of measurement, then extends the Indian place value system to the right of the units place. The chapter develops eight ideas: the need for smaller measuring units; the tenth part (one-tenth as 1/10 of a unit, reading 3 4/10 as three and four-tenths or 34 one-tenths); the hundredth part (10 one-tenths in a unit divided into 100 hundredths); decimal place value where the place value is 10 times the place to its right; using the decimal point to separate the whole-number part from the fractional part (705, 70.5, 7.05 mean different quantities); unit conversion using decimals (mm-cm-m, g-kg, paisa-rupee); locating and comparing decimals on the number line including the zero dilemma that 0.2 = 0.20 = 0.200 but 0.2 not equal 0.02; addition and subtraction of decimals by standard column procedure; and real-world consequences of decimal-point errors. CTET Paper 2 Mathematics tests this chapter through place-value items, decimal-to-fraction and fraction-to-decimal conversion, ordering and comparing decimals, unit conversion word problems and pedagogy items on common student misconceptions about zeros after the decimal point. The four tests below — Practice 15, Quiz 15, Hard 15, Mastery 30 — cover all eight ideas at the right depth and CTET difficulty.
