Understanding the Weather

About this chapter

Understanding the Weather is the second chapter of Class 7 Exploring Society: India and Beyond Part 1, opening the Geography theme. It defines weather as the state of the Earth's atmosphere at a particular time and place, and locates almost all weather phenomena in the troposphere — the layer 6 to 18 kilometres above the ground. The chapter then names the five elements of weather (temperature, precipitation, atmospheric pressure, wind, humidity) and walks through one measuring instrument per element — thermometer, rain gauge, barometer, wind vane and anemometer, and hygrometer. It introduces meteorology as the systematic study of weather and traces forecasting from village signs (ants, frogs, pine cones) to the India Meteorological Department (set up 1875, motto 'Aadityaat jaayate vrishtih') and to Automated Weather Stations, including the 2023 AWS at a Sikkim glacial lake. CTET Paper 2 SST tests this chapter through element-instrument matching, unit recall (mb, °C, mm, km/h, % relative humidity), IMD facts, troposphere height, IMD weather-warning colours, and forecast use-cases. The four tests — Practice 15, Quiz 15, Hard 15, Mastery 30 — cover all six topics at CTET depth and difficulty.
