English Language & Pedagogy
English Language is the Language-II option in both CTET papers. Each paper has a Language-II section of 30 questions — about 15 on reading comprehension (one prose and one poetry passage) and 15 on pedagogy of language teaching. These 6 notes cover the full official syllabus: reading, language acquisition, listening and speaking, grammar and language difficulties, and teaching materials. Because the medium is English, this subject has no Hindi mirror.
English Language & Pedagogy
Reading, listening, speaking, grammar — and the pedagogy of teaching them.
Reading Comprehension — Prose
Reading is meaning-making, not decoding. Skimming, scanning, inference, prior knowledge — pre/while/post-reading stages (NIOS 503 Block 2 Unit 5).
ENG-02Reading Comprehension — Poetry
Simile, metaphor, rhythm and imagery carry meaning, not decoration. Poetry should be heard before read silently (NIOS 503 Block 3 Unit 7, Block 2 §4.4.1).
ENG-03Language Learning & Acquisition; Principles of Language Teaching
Acquisition vs learning. Chomsky's LAD, Skinner behaviourism, Vygotsky social. Four methods — GTM, Direct, Audio-lingual, Communicative (NIOS 503 Block 1 Unit 3, Block 3 Unit 8).
ENG-04Role of Listening & Speaking; Function of Language
Fluency before accuracy in primary classes (NIOS 503 §4.5). Halliday's seven language functions. Why the silent classroom is the failing language classroom.
ENG-05Grammar, Language Difficulties & Disorders
Inductive over deductive grammar (NCF 2005). Errors are evidence of the child's current hypothesis (NIOS 503 Block 2 intro). Dyslexia via CDP-16.
ENG-06Teaching Materials, IT as Tool & Remedial Teaching
Beyond the textbook — realia, audio, video, IT (with equity caveat). Diagnose first, then re-teach the missing concept (NIOS 503 Block 3 Units 9–10).
