Environmental Studies
Environmental Studies is the Paper 1 subject that ties a child's everyday world — family, food, shelter, water, the animals and plants around them — to the wider concepts of environment and sustainability. NIOS 505 defines EVS as an integrated subject that draws upon insights from sciences, social studies and environmental education (NIOS 505 B1/U2). NCF-SE 2023 extended this vision with 'The World Around Us' (Our Wondrous World, Grades 3–5), integrating science, social sciences and environmental education through experiential learning. CTET asks 30 EVS questions in Paper 1 — roughly 15 content + 15 pedagogy.
EVS Themes & Pedagogy
Six NCERT themes drawn from the child's immediate environment, plus the pedagogy of integrated EVS teaching. NIOS 505 B1/U2 frames EVS as covering themes like food, water, shelter — real issues in children's immediate environment, connecting to experiences at home, neighbourhood and community.
Family & Friends — Relationships, Work & Play
Socio-cultural environment begins with family (NIOS 505 B1/U1). NCF 2005 Obj #3 — curiosity about social phenomena starts with the family and expands to wider spaces. NCERT Our Wondrous World Grade 3 Unit 1: Our Families and Communities; Grade 4 Unit 1: Our Community.
EVS-02Animals & Plants
Biotic components of the natural environment — plants, animals, micro-organisms, interdependent on air, water, nutrients (NIOS 505 B1/U1). NCF 2005 Obj #4 — nurture curiosity about the natural environment. NCERT Our Wondrous World Grade 3–4 Unit 2: Life Around Us; 'Nature Trail' encourages conservation of natural resources.
EVS-03Food
Food as a lived experience, not an abstraction — NCF 2005 Obj #2 (NIOS 505 B1/U2). NCERT Our Wondrous World Grade 3 Unit 3: Gifts of Nature (food from natural environment); Grade 4 Unit 3: Health and Well-being. Regional food diversity connects to geography and culture.
EVS-04Shelter
Human-made environment includes buildings and structures that provide goods and services (NIOS 505 B1/U1). NCERT Our Wondrous World Grade 4 Unit 1: Our Community; Chapter 9 'Different Lands, Different Lives' — landforms (plains, deserts, coasts, mountains) shape housing and culture.
EVS-05Water
Water is a key abiotic component of the natural environment (NIOS 505 B1/U1). NCF 2005 Obj #5 — develop awareness about environmental issues (scarcity, pollution). 'Knowledge alone does not guarantee positive environmental action' — conservation requires attitude change (NIOS 505 B1/U2). NCERT Our Wondrous World Grade 4 Unit 5: Our Environment.
EVS-06Travel
Child's world expands in ever-widening circles — from self to family, neighbourhood, country and beyond (NIOS 505 B1/U1 §1.3). NCF 2005 Obj #1 — locate relationships between natural, social and cultural environment. NCERT Our Wondrous World Grade 4 Unit 2: Life Around Us (community connections, transport).
EVS-07Things We Make and Do
NCF 2005 Obj #6 — engage children in hands-on activities and fabrication; Obj #7 — design and estimation as prelude to technological skills (NIOS 505 B1/U2). NCERT Our Wondrous World Grade 4 Unit 4: Things Around Us — interactive dialogues, investigation, changing conditions to draw inferences. Covers crafts, community occupations, tools.
EVS-08EVS Pedagogy
EVS = integrated/composite subject (not compartmentalised) — sciences + social studies + environmental education (NIOS 505 B1/U2). NCF 2005: constructivist, experiential approach (NIOS 505 B2/U5). Methods: activity-based learning, cooperative learning, field visit, observation, project (NIOS 505 B2/U5–U6).
